When I got pregnant years ago, I got a lot of counseling. This helped me at the time.  I was able to make the hardest decision of my life when everyone I knew was against it.  I placed my child for adoption with a great family. Everyone thought I was being selfish but I knew better. I needed to give my daughter a chance to have the kind of life I could not give her.  After the adoption, I was at peace with my decision but for quite a few years I couldn’t move on with my life. I could not seem to make good choices or take any risks. I felt paralyzed. I got some  more counseling but it didn’t help me a lot. At first I would feel better, but not for long. I would slip back into the same patterns and was getting nowhere fast. I dropped out of college twice and took a boring job just to survive. I got into a lot of relationships that were kind of toxic for me. I was irritable with everyone. I lived for the photos and reports from the adoptive family through my agency.

Then someone told me about Iris. She used to direct an adoptive agency. I talked to her on the phone, then  met her. I entered into an agreement for coaching.   Right away  I knew I had found someone smart, someone who didn’t judge me. Iris had lots of great ideas but she did not push her thoughts on me. She encouraged me to come up with my own ideas based on my beliefs and needs and suddenly they were sprouting all over the place. I was amazed at how creative I could be with her support. I began to deal with the grief over the loss of my child that I had not really faced and slowly got unstuck about a lot of things. I wished I had worked with Iris’ adoption agency to place my baby when it was still open. I don’t think I have ever met anybody like Iris. She is so sensitive and caring but also so direct and no-nonsense and doesn’t put up with a lot of “bs”.

Now I have goals. I want to become a nurse or a doctor. I am back in college and doing great. Iris even wrote me a recommendation for college and I got a scholarship for the first time to a good school. I have a boyfriend who really cares about me. I  have learned to take things more slowly and to meet my needs – not just other people’s and not to care so much about what they think. I have so much more respect for myself. I still miss my daughter. I know one day if she wants to meet me she will be proud of me, for sure. I am proud of myself and owe it to Iris. Thank you!

I began working with Iris when I was struggling through new widowhood and feeling life would never be ok for me again.
