It isn’t easy to discover the perfect words or phrases to let people know what you can do for them as a coach. Over the past months I have come up with a number of possibilities. I keep playing with ideas. That’s ok because outreach approaches always seem to evolve and change, based on where we are in life personally, our current goals, the state of the business organism and the external environment. Like everything else in my life, this is a process of discovery and once I step back and become playful and willing to experiment, things start to flow. All of the current coach training wisdom tells us we need to find our niche(s)/areas of expertise. We are taught that we must communicate the ways in which we can most help our clients, so they will consider our services crucial and essential, especially in a difficult economy.
For 28 years plus in my work life, I have specialized in one niche area, and yet have also had great passion about so many other things. Therefore, I have been reluctant to box myself in and limit myself in with my growing coaching practice. For me, discovering coaching has been about finding new ways to help people and stay energized and creative at the same time.
On reflection, I think it doesn’t all need to boil down to having a very specific thing you assist with. You can work at helping people with relationships, loss and bereavement, careers, parenting, adoption and infertility issues, creativity, gay and lesbian issues, those who don’t fit in, those who fit in too much and who are ready to break out, or any other issues or goals. . I am not sure that defining your niche is as crucial as some think. I think the process through which we address those problems or life issues is important and the skill, spirit and talent we bring with us to the process of coaching our clients. Also, our ability to form trusting and lasting relationships so that clients feel safe and valued, is crucial to our success as coaches.
I am hoping some of you will indulge me and will allow me to throw some thoughts out to you to mull over. It would be terrific to hear what you think. Does any of this intrigue you?
